WatchList: The Newsroom

They already have many hits: True Blood, Girls, Boardwalk Empire and Game Of Thrones... but for HBO that isn't enough, and they are now giving us, what I'm sure, will be another one.

Created by Oscar winner for Best Adapted Screenplay (The Social Network): Aaron Sorkin (also known for A Few Good Men and Moneyball). HBO's The Newsroom is a show about the behind-the-scenes look at the people who make the nightly-cable news happen.

The story focus on the anchor, Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels- Dumb and Dumber, Looper), his new executive producer with whom he was romantically involved in the past– Mackenzie MacHale (Emily Mortimer- Hugo, Shutter Island), and his newsroom staff: senior producer, Jim Harper (John Gallagher Jr.- Spring Awakening). Will's blog writer, Neal Sampat (Dev Patel- Skins, Slumdog Millionaire). And associate producer, Maggie Jordan (Alison Pill- Midnight In Paris, Scott Pilgrim vs The World, Milk).

Cast also includes former executive producer, Don Keefer (Thomas Sadoski). Financial analyst, Sloan Sabbith (Olivia Munn- Perfect Couples). President of ACN, Charlie Skinner (Sam Waterstons- Law & Order) and a recurring role for Jane Fonda as Leona Lansing, CEO of the parent company of Charlie's network.

The series premiered on June 24th with a incredibly strong pilot that was beyond amazing, jaw-dropping, even. Everything on The Newsroom is done right: the writing, the actors, the direction, the music... In just one episode, the show manages to captivate you so deeply that you won't even know time is passing by until is over. Once again, Mr. Aaron Sorkin is letting us have a taste of his incredible talent in the best possible way.

Just watch the opening scene, and you'll know what I'm talking about:

In my opinion, if the show doesn't cross the fine line between entertainment and politics, The Newsroom has the possibility of becoming a great classic. I'll just keep an eye on it and see what happens next.
